Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) got a mention in the King’s speech

King Charles's speech for the state opening of parliament took place two weeks after Labour won a landslide result in the 4th July election. While the waste sector didn’t get a mention, SAF did. The new government has committed to creating a new Sustainable Aviation Fuels (Revenue Certainty Mechanism) Bill to help biofuel companies raise sufficient funds to finance their projects. The CEO of Airlines UK described the Bill that will incentivise SAF production in the UK asa positive step forward”.

The plastics industry has called for clarity on mass balance in the UK

Last week’s bulletin was full of calls to action for the new government and this week is no different. The plastics industry has written to the new Exchequer Secretary, James Murray, to respond to a previous mass balance consultation carried out by the previous government. The consultation closed last October and has had no response. Coordinated by the British Plastics Federation, 14 organisations signed the open letter, expressing concern that the uncertainty on mass balance is causing companies to invest outside the UK. 

A coalition of businesses have outlined 10 priorities for the Government to grow the UK clean industry

A group consisting of several businesses, NGOs and universities have released a paper containing 10 priority actions for the new government to start anew era of clean industry”. Those involved in the paper have expressed concerns that the UK is falling behind its counterparts in the race for a profitable green industry. Policy Director at Green Alliance, Roz Bulleid, put this down toyears of u-turns and hesitation [which have] dented investor confidence in the UK’s green transition and frustrated many of our leading firms.”

Bristol Waste is set to build a multi-million-pound processing facility

The new state of the art processing facility at the Avonmouth Household Reuse and Recycling Centre willtransform recyclingin the area. The build is due to be completed early next year and will substantially increase capacity to handle recyclable materials.
