CNG to offer carbon neutral fuel for HGVs

Compressed natural gas (CNG) infrastructure developer CNG Fuels has announced plans to become the UK’s first supplier of carbon neutral fuel for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs).

The Solihull-based company expects to offer carbon neutral biomethane gas from 2021 at the same price as the renewable biomethane fuel it currently supplies.

The carbon neutral alternative will be made from manure, which gives off methane, a greenhouse gas 28 times more powerful than CO2.

Using methane as an HGV fuel prevents it from going into the atmosphere and reduces overall emissions.

CNG currently supplies renewable biomethane sourced from food waste. The fuel is used by several major freight operators including the John Lewis Partnership, Hermes, Argos, and ASDA.

CNG is also developing a network of public access HGV biomethane refuelling stations on major routes and expects to have six stations in operation by spring 2020, which could refuel up to 3,000 HGVs per day.

The company is currently consulting on how to use this network to support low-carbon hydrogen and battery electric technologies for HGVs when these become commercially viable for freight transport, as is predicted to happen from 2030 by the Committee on Climate Change.

HGVs account for 4.2% of UK carbon emissions, so decarbonising the sector is vital to meeting the UK’s recently announced goal of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Philip Fjeld, CEO of CNG, said: “We want to help decarbonise freight transport and enable fleet operators to meet Net Zero targets now, supporting the UK’s climate targets.

“Renewable biomethane sourced from manure is currently the best low-carbon solution for HGVs, but we want to be ready to support our customers when other technologies are commercially viable.”
