CEMA UK Holdings Limited has completed the acquisition of an energy from waste project under development in Poland.

The co-generation plant is planned to have an annual throughput capacity for 120,000 tons of refuse derived fuel and export electricity and heat. This new project aims to help meet an urgently needed new thermal waste treatment infrastructure required in Poland.

The estimated demand for thermal waste treatment capacity is in excess of 4 million tonnes per year while the existing capacity is approximately 1 million tonnes. Simon, Thorne, CEO of Polish project company CEMA Energy (wholly owned by CEMA UK) explains that Poland offers investment opportunities in the waste management sector due to the fact that it has ‘lagged behind’ countries in western Europe whilst being required to meet more stringent EU recycling and recovery targets. These opportunities are supported by generous government grants and guarantees as well as providing long term guaranteed subsidies for energy from waste production.

CEMA’s new project is only one of a handful in Poland which is permitted and ready for construction to start, planned for June 2021 following completion of project agreements and project financing.

Thorne stated: "This is an exciting industry opportunity in Silesia in Poland with positive support and engagement from the local municipalities and located in the most populated region of Poland. There is potential for collaboration between CEMA UK and the UK waste management industry and sector funders.”
