The UK Emissions Trading Scheme Authority has published a list of consultations asking for stakeholders to have their say on the Emissions Trading Scheme.

Last year, the UK government announced commitments to consult stakeholders after announcing the inclusion of EfW and waste incineration in the scheme by 2028, with a two-year phase-in period from 2026.

Currently, the ETS only covers aviation, power, and industry sectors, but in January, it was announced the scheme would last until at least 2050, suggesting scope to expand to more sectors. The Government hopes the scheme will be a key part of addressing climate change and achieving net zero in the UK.

The first consultation will offer further details on plans for the inclusion of the energy from waste and waste incineration sectors and a chance for the sector to have its say on how it will work.

A second consultation asks for views on plans to widen the scheme to include UK-based greenhouse gas removal techniques too.

The consultations are open now until August 2nd (EfW/waste incineration consultation) and 15 August (greenhouse gas removals).
