Dalkia Wastenergy, leader in the RDF heating system technology: The waste management solution 

Running on Refuse Derived Fuels (RDFs), Dalkia Wastenergy’s RDF heating system offers a real local alternative to fossil fuels and landfilling waste. An innovative solution supported by the Energy Act which establishes a legislative framework for delivering secure, affordable and low carbon energy and includes provisions on decarbonisation and Electricity Market Reform (EMR). 

Made out of non-hazardous high calorific waste, once considered as non-recyclable, RDF has now become an alternative to fossil fuels since no more landfilling is required. 

As far as innovation is concerned, the high-performance furnace is a patented technology designed, built and operated by Dalkia Wastenergy. 

Our kiln does not require any additional equipment to prepare the Refuse Derived fuel, meaning an easier processing. It accepts all types of NCV above 12 MJ/kg with a granulometry of up to 350 mm. Dalkia Wastenergy renewed the patent after modernising the technology, and expanded it to Europe in 2019. 

33 streams with this technology were built in France and around the world, seven of them currently operated by our teams. 

The oldest Dalkia Wastenergy furnace still in operation was commissioned in 1981. It proves if needed the robustness and longevity of the kiln. 

A wide range of benefits comes out of that technology amongst which include:

  • A supply of renewable energy: thanks to energy recovery into electricity, heat (steam/hot water), cooling or combined heat and power (cogeneration), an RDF boiler can power an average-sized city with green energy (the equivalent of 3,000 housing units) or a manufacturing site requiring at least 5 MW in heating
  • All waste types are 100% accepted, even those previously considered to be final refuse can power a Dalkia Wastenergy RDF boiler
  • A guaranteed capacity to process RDFs which goes from 10,000 to 60,000 T/year
  • An energy capacity of the RDF boiler from 5 to 25 MW 
  • A high performance, easy to set up locally, and a solution that can be built in maximum two years once the planning consent is obtained
  • A technology allowing the best yield for a waste recovery unit on the market; its refractory lining allows maximal resistance to high temperatures and keeps maintenance costs down

No more than 5,000 m² are needed for a Dalkia Wastenergy RDF boiler layout, a small surface that simplifies permitting and operations.
