The UK government has announced it will allocate an additional £24.5 million to the LeedsPIPES energy from waste (EfW) project, along with an additional £12.6 million for the Hemiko multi-source heat pump network in Barnsley.

The £24.5 million will fund plans for the LeedsPIPES heat network to extend its reach into the South Bank area, one of Europe’s largest brownfield regeneration sites. It is hoped this will connect 8,000 more homes and buildings to the heat network powered by waste heat.

The funding comes from the Green Heat Network Fund (GHNF), a capital grant programme and is a core element in financing the Government’s Heat Network Transformation Programme. This new investment is part of a broader effort to drive sustainable urban regeneration, with £57 million awarded across five projects. Around 17,000 new homes and buildings will benefit from the new funding.

Barnsley’s Hemiko multi-source heat pump network will also receive funding from the GHNF, in an attempt to decarbonize heating across various businesses and public sector buildings.

Miatta Fahnbulleh, Minister for Energy Consumers said: “Building new, greener heat networks is just one of the ways we are investing in clean power, helping to finally secure our country’s energy independence.”
