Our annual EfW Conference - the UK and Europe’s leading event for the waste to energy sector, where attendees can share best practice and insights into the latest industry developments - is just around the corner.

Taking place virtually from 10-12 March, the conference has adapted to an online format for 2021 much like nearly everything else in our calendars after the COVID-19 pandemic exploded into our lives unexpectedly last year.

Whilst the format of the event will certainly be different, the high quality of expertise will again be brought by top speakers from all over the world to discuss developments in policy as countries work toward net zero, focusing on exploring the role of waste to energy in the drive to carbon neutral.

Included among the topics discussed in our virtual hosted sessions will be the technical challenges and successes of CCS and hydrogen development, developments in RDF trade and the implications of Brexit, and the impact of COVID-19 on the waste sector as we continue to weather the storm into 2021.

Heat network solutions

George Munson, senior project manager of Sustainable Energy and Air Quality Resources and Housing at Leeds City Council will be joined by Ian Calvert, director at the Association for Decentralised Energy, to look at the Leeds PIPES heat network and the reason for its success. Ian will also chair a session on local authority-based heat network delivery with Jayne Clare, managing director at Energetik; and Jim Kendall, managing director at LondonEnergy.

Project delivery

Natalie Maletras, senior associate of Waste & Infrastructure at Stantec, will explore the issue of gaining planning consent amidst public concerns on the afternoon of day one, discussing which forms of engagement and information could bridge the gap between developers and community, chaired by Dr Adam Read, director of External Affairs at Suez Recycling & Recovery UK.

Following this, a session on ensuring permitting requirements are in line with new BREF and BAT standards will take place involving Ben Freeman, E&B senior advisor at Environment Agency; Stuart Davies, head of Technical Compliance at Viridor; and Paul James, CIWM chair Thermal Treatment Special Interest Group and director, independent consultant and advisor at Energy & Resources Ltd.

Neil Young, technical director at Brockwell Energy will lead a session on project delivery structures with David Cullen, programme director at NLWA; Alex Young, project development manager at Bioenergy Infrastructure Group; Dr-Ing Ute Fleck, head of Sales EPC, CNIM SA; Ian Crummack, MD, Cobalt Energy and Siegfried Scholz, MD Standardkessel Baumgarte. Plus, a session on achieving financial close and what investors will be looking for going forward, led by EfW Consulting Ltd director Jeff Gibbon.

Circular economy and resource recovery

On our journey to net zero, circular economy principles will be a big topic surrounding the waste sector and will be the focus for several sessions across the conference.

Claudia Amos, technical director at Anthesis, will lead a session on European plastics material flows and value chains on the first day, followed up by Adrian Griffiths, CEO of Recycling Technologies, exploring opportunities for advanced technical solutions to the plastics waste stream.

Elsewhere, James Ng, APCr contracts manager at O.C.O Technology, will lead a session on optimising circular economy principles with conversion of APCr and other ash streams to useable products.

Growth markets

An insight into the energy from waste market in Brazil will be led by The Brazilian Association for Energy Recovery from Waste (ABREN)’s Yuri Schmitke A. Belchior Tisi; Flavio Matos, MSc; and André Tchernobilsky; chaired by CNIM Business and Products Development director Christophe Cord’Homme.

On day two, Edward Nicholas of Tribe Infrastructure Group will explore the growth potential of the Australian waste to energy market from an investor/developer view point; Adam Sabuda of Fortum Power and Heat Polska Sp. provides insight into the market in Poland and Simon Thorne of Simon Thorne Consulting looks at the environment for  bringing a project to financial close in Poland; plus a focus on CEE growth markets for waste to energy will be chaired by Tim Buisseret, country director, UK Government Department for International Trade.

Complex projects

Benoit Englebert, Sales and Business Development manager at Keppel Seghers, will explore the development of the Sinagpore Tuas IMWF, looking at the engineering challenges and multi-partner coordination on day two.

Following this, David Cullen, programme director at NLWA, will lead a session focused on the North London Heat and Power project, which will include building a world-class Energy Recovery Facility, providing enough energy to serve the needs of 127,000 homes.

Plant optimisation

Technikgruppe CEO Matthias Lukic and Business Development manager Damir Zibrat will discuss improving plant performance and reducing downtime with advanced combustion performance monitoring.

Two case study sessions will explore upgrading an ageing plant: the first, focusing on reducing maintenance costs, with Matthias Mohr, ZVAWS, Germany; and Detlev Huber, Martin GmBH; chaired by Paul Davies of CIWM and Energy & Resources Ltd. The second will focus on increasing electrical and heat output, led by Altay Koc, ZAB, Switzerland and chaired by CNIM’s Christophe Cord’Homme.

Carbon capture and storage

The final day of the conference will see a strong focus on CCS, kicking off with a session on policy and funding for CCS development led by Christian Holzeitner, programme director at EU Innovation Fund.

Jannicke Gerner Bjerkås, director CCS at Fortum Oslo Varme AS will discuss development of CCS in Fortum Oslo Varme, and following this, a session on CCS for a UK waste to energy plant led by Stuart Hayward-Higham, technical development director at Suez Recycling & Recovery UK Ltd.

All three will be chaired by Susanna Elks, energy policy advisor at ES Catapult.

Other topics to look forward to will be that of localised energy and the benefits from smaller plants, led by Barthelemy Fourment, head of International Development at Dalkia Wastenergy; exploring the role of waste to energy in hydrogen development with CEO of Ways2H Jean-Louis Kindler; and an industry discussion on lessons learnt for the waste to energy industry from the Covid months with Ian Crummack, MD, Cobalt Energy and Dr Adam Read, External Affairs director at Suez Recycling & Recovery UK.
