Viridor has announced that it has reached a financial close on the Thameside Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) at Tilbury Docks. After entering into a purchase agreement in 2022, the financial close marks the next step in developing an energy-from-waste facility on the site.

Viridor’s Head of ERF Projects, Patrick Daws said that the project will play “a vital role in reducing landfill waste and producing renewable energy, while also being a responsible neighbour to the Tilbury community.”

The facility is Viridor’s twelfth state-of-the-art ERF in the UK and is set to process around 350,000 tonnes of residual waste annually. It will generate enough energy to power the equivalent of 93,000 homes.

Viridor has awarded Kanadevia Inova (formerly Hitachi Zosen Inova) the Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract for the Tilbury Dock site. Viridor said the two companies have a “strong relationship” as they have previously worked on several projects, including their Westfield ERF in Fife. With planning consent secured from the Government, construction will begin later this month.
