CIWM report calls for reforms in UK battery recycling
The Chartered Institute of Wastes Management (CIWM) is urging significant reforms in UK battery recycling due to the rise in fires caused by batteries in waste and recycling facilities caused by discarded batteries. As batteries become integral to more everyday products, CIWM has emphasised the need for producer responsibility regulations to keep up with the pace of battery technology.
Batteries aren’t the only thing being reformed - a new waste strategy has been adopted in Essex

Is Paris 2024 the greenest Olympics yet?
If you’re excited for this summer’s Olympics in Paris, you may also be happy to hear that the organising committee have vowed to be the greenest games in its history! Some of their earth friendly actions have included construction of only two new stadiums and providing beds in the Olympic Village made out of cardboard and tables made of recycled shuttlecocks. Despite some criticisms from climate groups regarding gaps in its strategy, the Games aim to reduce carbon emissions by 50% compared to previous years.
Avanti West Coast has revealed that they have saved 500 tonnes of recyclables from ending up in the bin
After introducing waste segregation officers at its stations last year, the trainline has reportedly prevented nearly 500 tonnes of recyclables from going to waste. Let’s hope the scheme is introduced across more trainlines!
