Coastal Recycling has announced it will begin turning residual waste into fuel, aiming to convert 5,200 tonnes of residual waste into Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF). The commercial waste disposal service will be the first waste management company in Devon to convert waste into fuel.
Once at full capacity, the system which is comprised of two aerobic digester units, will process up to 20 tonnes of non-recyclable waste every day. Technology for the project will be provided by Advetec.
Group commercial director at Coastal Recycling, Emily Delve, said explained that the technology willl offer customers more options to move towards decarbonisation. She said:
By innovating in this way, we are helping customers reduce their carbon footprint and doing our bit for the communities we’re part of.”
Advetec has provided similar technology to other waste management companies across the UK, including Derby-based Go 4 Greener which converts washroom waste into SRF in February.
As well as diverting waste to landfill, Advetec has also said that the project at Coastal Recycling’s processing site in Torrington, North Devon will reduce the mass of waste, leading to fewer waste collections. The contract is set to last eight years.
