Encyclis have started using vegetable oils in the UK's first pilot programme to replace diesel in Energy from Waste processes with sustainable hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO). The pilot is part of the EfW company’s mission to decarbonise and support the UK’s net zero targets.
After a year-long research and development programme, Encyclis has started using HVO as part of the start-up process at their Newhurst Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) in Leicestershire.
HVO is produced from fully renewable and sustainable waste and can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% when used instead of fossil fuels. It is produced when hydrogen molecules are introduced into the raw fat or oil molecule and can be used in any diesel engine without modifications. Once longer-term testing is completed, Encyclis plans to expand the use of HVO to replace diesel across its fleet of energy recovery facilities.
Encyclis CEO, Owen Michaelson, said he felt “immense pride” about the project.
We are working to provide a public sanitation solution that not only recovers energy and other resources from residual waste but actively cuts carbon emissions through initiatives like this, and our carbon capture programme.”
