Veolia has announced the expansion of its wood recycling and processing capacity by 50,000 tonnes per year.

Designed to support the treatment of wood waste from Merseyside, Veolia’s new Runcorn Wood Recycling Facility supports the company’s goal of increasing sustainability and backing the UK’s drive to net zero carbon ahead of COP26 later this year. The expansion will add to the 410,000 tonnes of waste wood already processed by Veolia each year.

According to Veolia, around 80 per cent of waste wood will be enabled a second life as flooring, furniture, worktops and other particle board applications, which will also help to supply the company’s renewable energy generation.

Lower grade material is sent to Veolia’s biomass energy sites, which supply renewable electricity and heat that supports industry, healthcare and around 8,000 residents connected to carbon zero district heating schemes.

High grade wood is also processed by Veolia for bedding products for the equestrian industry, poultry and dairy farms and a diverse range of other products such as spillage absorbents, paint filler, filtration systems, packaging and fibre board.

“To decarbonise our future and protect our planet we know it is essential to act now,” commented Gavin Graveson, executive vice president of Veolia UK & Ireland. “We are continually developing our recycling and renewable energy services, and the opening of this new site highlights our commitment to boost sustainability, and cut the financial and environmental costs of wasting these materials.

“By giving this material a new use or transforming it into renewable energy we can cut our carbon emissions, reduce landfill and help the UK reach its net zero carbon target.”

Gavin Graveson, Executive Vice President of Veolia UK & Ireland, will give the opening address at the Energy from Waste conference on day 1, 10 March 2021. More info here: efwconference.com/programme
