Blue Phoenix – Resources Reborn
Blue Phoenix, the world’s largest Incinerator Bottom Ash (IBA) processor, is delighted to be a silver sponsor of this year’s Energy from Waste (EfW) Conference.
In today’s world, waste has become a global challenge, as consumption continues to rise and the traditional ‘take, make dispose’, linear economy has led to environmental degradation, resource depletion and excessive waste. A Circular Economy approach offers a sustainable alternative, where materials are kept in use for as long as possible.
For over 25 years Blue Phoenix has been processing IBA from EfW facilities and ensuring metal and aggregates are not lost from the economy. In the UK alone, Blue Phoenix processes almost 1.5 million tonnes of IBA per annum across its 10 operational facilities. As well as the UK, Blue Phoenix has operational facilities in Europe, America, and Australia and provides support to EfW operators globally. Blue Phoenix’s key focus is taking residues from the waste industry and developing sustainable solutions and encouraging resource reuse.
To support these international operations, Blue Phoenix boasts an in-house Engineering, Procurement and Construction department, with a dedicated engineering team based in the Netherlands. This team are exploring new technologies and processes to enhance our offering to the EfW industry and ensure that resources remain within the Global Circular Economy.
The UK business is well established and has a wealth of experience to drive forward innovation. Blue Phoenix has also successfully transferred its regulatory expertise and implemented a ‘Sustainable and Responsible’ regulation framework in Western Australia.
Blue Phoenix’s continued objective is to support the EfW industry, in doing so we can help to improve its operations by finding secondary uses for their residue and play a critical role in the supply chain, ensuring resources remain available for use.
The Circular Economy is central to the sector’s ambitions and future. Blue Phoenix is proud to drive forward progress and innovation in this arena. Processing IBA ensures that there is no waste from waste. Recovering metals and producing a resource from the remaining material, for onward use as an aggregate supports and enhances achieving Environment and Sustainability Goals (‘ESG’s).
Processing IBA prevents valuable resources from going to landfill, preserving them to be reused within the economy. Incinerator Bottom Ash Aggregate (IBAA) when produced
effectively is suitable for use in many different construction and civil engineering applications, contributing to decarbonisation.
This video showcases a perfect example of Blue Phoenix’s operations delivering Circular Economy benefits locally. The Local Authority waste supplied to the EfW generates energy, the residue IBA is processed by Blue Phoenix and used directly in the construction of the same Local Authority’s road networks.

In addition to the benefits of producing IBAA for the aggregates industry, recovering metals from IBA offers industry and manufacturers a more sustainable and safer source of metals, by reducing the need to mine for ore and providing a low carbon alternative for Copper, Aluminium and Steel.
Keeping waste in the Circular Economy is essential for building a sustainable, resource efficient world. Adopting a circular economy has the power to shrink global GHG emissions and cut virgin resource use. IBA processing contributes directly to this strategy by diverting waste away from landfills and reducing primary resource extraction. This in turn helps to improve the sustainability of the Energy-from-Waste (EFW) sector.
Blue Phoenix is a founding member of MIBAAA (Manufacturers of Incinerator Bottom Ash Aggregate Association) and continues to support its work developing regulation alongside the Environment Agency. Blue Phoenix promotes the responsible use of IBAA.
It is important to choose the right IBA processor; one that reflects the integrity of the EfW industry to manage waste with care, from reception to final use. Blue Phoenix has a proven and reliable track record working with both customers and regulators. Blue Phoenix prides itself on delivering a product with sustainable benefits in a competitive market, whilst most importantly, always ensuring that its employees go home safely at the end of the working day.
