The Government has awarded £2.7 million to heat networks in the sixth round of their Heat Network Efficiency Scheme (HNES). 33 networks across England and Wales have received funding for improvement works and optimisation studies.
The grant programme which aims to improve performance in existing heat networks. Projects receive either direct capital funding for improvement works or funding to support studies that help identify causes of low efficiency levels.
An array of groups have received funding, including universities, local authorities and housing associations. The Reservoir and Watersreach heat network is one project that will receive capital support to implement improvements found in optimisation studies that were also funded by the HNES.
Principal Consultant at Gemserv, Louise Singleton noted that it is “encouraging” to see applicants being proactive once they receive funding. “Projects are now being awarded capital funding to implement recommendations from these studies that will go on to improve outcomes for residents and occupants.
So far, the scheme has helped improve heating and water supplies for over 41,000 residents connected to 192 heat networks. Final application submissions for Round 8 funding close on 8 November.
